Fuel cells are energy conversion devices that produce electricity from externally supplied fuels (to the anode side) reacting with an oxidant (on the cathode side), generally in the presence of an electrolyte. There are no moving parts and no combustion. Possible fuels include hydrogen, hydrocarbons and alcohols, while possible oxidants include oxygen, air, chlorine, and chlorine dioxide. Since the electrodes are catalytic, they are relatively stable. Most fuel cells operate continuously for as long as the flows are maintained.

Fuel cells have a wide variety of potential applications. These include base load power plants, electric and hybrid vehicles, auxiliary power, off-grid power supply, notebook computer power, and portable charging docks for small electronics.
